Fourteen First Dates, courtesy of February
Does Valentine’s Day have your heart beating out of your chest?
Regardless of your relationship status, you may be feeling excited, anxious, or maybe even sad.
If you’re feeling particularly nervous about your Valentine’s Day or weekend plans, fear not!
I (a self-proclaimed love expert) have created a list of date ideas just for you! Many of these could be called basic, but ultimately, dates are about the people, not the place. Austin offers so many opportunities for fun memories!
Of course, these don’t have to be first dates. I’m just sharing ways to have fun with your significant other, crush, or your best friend(s). Quality time with others is a key aspect of physical and mental wellness, so we encourage you to prioritize it.
Number 1: Year-round Skating at Chaparral Ice
Ice skating can be the perfect opportunity to show off some athleticism, cause a few laughs, and, dare I say it, break the ice. Chaparral Ice, located on West Anderson Lane, offers public skating daily and opportunities for adult-only skating.
Number 2: Brunch on South Congress
Window shopping on South Congress is a classic Austinite activity, and there’s something for everyone. While you’re at it, grab brunch at Two Hands, one of my favorite restaurants, then stop at Jeni’s Ice Cream for dessert.
Number 3: Fun Photo Ops at Interactive Museums
Wonderspaces offers exciting interactive art exhibits, perfect for pictures. They also have a fancy virtual reality experience. If you or your date have a sweet tooth, Austin’s Museum of Ice Cream offers unlimited treats and cool sensory installations.
Number 4: Hike or Stroll Austin’s Trails
Austin has beautiful weather that you should take advantage of! If you’re a lover of the great outdoors, walk around Lady Bird Lake or hike up Mount Bonnell for some stellar views.
Number 5: Experience a UT Gameday
No matter what season it is, chances are there’s a Texas gameday in the near future. Texas does a great job ensuring a fun, energetic experience for sports enthusiasts and casual fans alike. Basketball games are perfect if you’re looking for an intense atmosphere, or check out baseball for a more laid-back chance to get to know someone.
Number 6: Cute Coffee at Mozart’s
Mozart’s is a well-known coffee spot for a reason— everything about it is good! The views, food and coffee make it a great spot to start or end a day with your favorite person.
Number 7: Pickleballing at the Pitch
I would call this place a hidden gem. Austin FC’s practice facility, The Pitch, offers a fun place to play pickleball and soccer, along with multiple food options. For anyone who enjoys an active lifestyle, this could be a great new place to compete and eat.
Number 8: Favorite Food Trucks
Food trucks are an Austin staple. For foodies, food truck hopping is a fantastic date idea. One of my favorites is Pedroso’s Pizza on Burnet Road. It sits right next to the Night Owl, so feel free to grab a few drinks, too.
Number 9: Get Jazzy
“Live Music Capital” is not just a nickname, downtown is home to many great music venues. Parker Jazz Club and Elephant Room are just a couple examples of jazz bars in Austin that offer a lively atmosphere and good music. A night out on the town could be the best way to create a memorable first date.
Number 10: Zilker and the Zoo
For my 17th birthday, I asked one of my friends to take me to the zoo. Afterwards, we went to Zilker Park, where 10 of my best friends had set up a surprise birthday picnic for me! It’s one of my favorite memories. The Austin Zoo isn’t particularly grand, but it’s fun! Zilker Park is beautiful and can make for a great time for hours. If the weather is looking nice, this duo is a fantastic date option.
Number 11: The Legendary Paramount Theatre
The Paramount Theatre is so pretty and just down the street from the state capitol. They show movies and host performances, providing you with a plethora of options. The outside makes for a cool photo opportunity as well!
Number 12: Admire All Kinds of Views at the Oasis
One of my close friends asked a girl out on a date, planned it, took her to the Oasis, and found out it was closed. The Oasis is well-known for its view of Lake Travis. And, the restaurant is hosting a special event just for Valentine’s Day! Dinner dates make for interesting conversations, so I highly recommend a nice place to eat for a first date— just maybe make a reservation, or at least make sure it’s open.
Number 13: The Water’s Nice
Austin just-so-happens to sit on the lovely Colorado River, fostering an outdoor lifestyle. If you’re looking to swim, check out Barton Springs pool right next to Zilker, which stays between 68 and 70 degrees year-round. My personal favorite outdoor activity is paddleboarding and nothing beats Lady Bird Lake. SUP ATX at the Texas Rowing Center can provide accessible paddleboard rentals for you and yours!
Number 14: Attend the Event of the Year
What is the event of the year, you ask? TEDxUTAustin Conference on March 23rd! With a stellar speaker lineup, you won’t want to miss this. Purchase tickets for you and your valentine on February 23rd!
Valentine’s Day is here to remind us to gather with others and pursue the things we love. Don’t stress— you are loved by so many people, for so many reasons. Whether or not you have a Valentine, we at TEDxUTAustin want to encourage you to love extra well this time of year.
